If you are a bit short on money this year, that’s no reason to deny yourself a good time. Who says that you have to pay an arm and a leg to have a fantastic vacation? Take a look at our list of low-cost alternatives to popular holiday destinations – perhaps it will inspire you to give in and take that trip!

1. Vietnam

Despite the fact that it has grown in popularity in recent years, Vietnam is still very, very cheap – you can easily get by on $15 a day without discomfort. Fascinating local culture, food that is not less interesting, although much less widely advertised than Chinese or Japanese cuisine, friendly people and unspoiled (well, outside of Hanoi and other large cities) nature – what else one may ask for?

2. Mexico

Despite not being a household word for a holiday destination, Mexico is still one of the best value-for-money offers out there. World-class hotels, excellent beaches, fantastic local cuisine – all for more than reasonable prices. If you are of more adventurous disposition, you may want to read a travel blog or two before going there – they are a goldmine of information on less well-traveled locations. But hurry up – in a few years’ time it is likely to become much more popular, and the prices are expected to come up.

3. Sardinia

One of the best places in the Mediterranean if you like sunny weather, a lot of sandy beaches and beautiful nature. However, during the high season Sardinia beaches may be quite expensive, especially if you don’t book in advance – that’s why it is better to go there in September or October, when the weather is still warm and the sea is inviting, but the crowds have already ebbed away.

4. Honduras

You rarely hear about Honduras as a holiday spot – it is much less known than other Central American countries, like Guatemala or Costa Rica. But if you are out for a real bargain, it’s a perfect option for you. With local fabulous sandy beaches, excellent diving opportunities and unbelievably cheap food and drink, you will have the time of your life for a fraction of what you have to pay somewhere else.

5. Bali

Just like the rest of Indonesia, Bali is a perfect bargain holiday destination that has something to offer to everyone — beautiful ancient temples for cultural tourists, a lot of sun, beaches and sea for those who just want to swim and get a tan. Locals are hospitable and happy to welcome you on the island and it is also possible to meet people from all over the world, as Bali is a popular place of living for downshifters looking to escape the hectic life in Europe and America.

6. Latvia

Looking for something less tropical? Latvia, an undiscovered corner of Europe, at your service. Exciting nightlife (the fact that in summer the twilight is about midnight and the day breaks at 4 a.m. helps to stay awake), gorgeous art-nouveau architecture together with quaint little villages all around, pine forests and national parks – all of this is waiting for you, with prices more than reasonable.

7. Bulgaria

Another lesser known gem is Bulgaria. Mild climate, sunny weather from May to October, and a selection of beaches on warm, shallow sea. All of this is perfect for families looking for a holiday that is satisfying, safe and cheap, all at the same time.
